PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stainless steel member superior in sliding characteristics by employing an austenitic stainless steel superior in press formability as a material, forming it and nitriding it to give it high hardness. SOLUTION: The steel sheet has a composition which comprises, by mass%, 0.06% or less C+N, 1.0% or less Si, 5.0% or less Mn, 5.0-15.0% Ni, 15.0-20.0% Cr and 0.5-5.0% Cu, 0-3.0% Mo; and has an index Md<SB>30</SB>in between -60 and -10, which shows the amount of deformation-induced martensite to be produced, and an index SFI of 30 or higher, which shows a degree of difficulty for stacking fault. The manufacturing method comprises the steps of: forming the steel sheet into a predetermined shape; and nitriding it. Thus manufactured member acquires a structure having deformation-induced martensite in an amount of 2.0 to 50.0 vol.%, and shows a hardness of 600 Hv or higher in a formed and nitrided part.
