An outer stator provided in a reciprocating cycle engine along with an inner stator and a mover, having a tubular shape placeable around the mover coaxially with the axis of the mover, and forming a magnetic path between itself and the inner stator via a field magnet section of the mover. The outer stator has an opening formed on that inner peripheral surface side of the outer stator which faces the mover; an inner space opened via the opening and in which a coil is placed; and recesses provided at both ends along the axis when viewed in a cross section including the axis and recessed radially outward from the inner peripheral surface side.
