PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering wheel device for an automobile, which does not project needlessly into a compartment. SOLUTION: This device comprises a base 1 mounted to a vehicle body 22, a steering wheel 2 rotating between a non-usage position and a usage position, an operation plate 3 swinging inside the steering wheel 2, and a lever pushing the steering wheel 2 to the usage position together with swing of the operation plate 3. The steering wheel 2 has a grip part 8, and an arm part 9 extending from the grip part 8. The arm part 9 is rotatably journalled on the vehicle body 22 side. The operation plate 3 is swingably journalled to the vehicle body 22 on the journalling side of the steering wheel 2, and is movable on the grip part 8 side of the steering wheel 2. The lever 4 is rotatably supported on the base 1 side. A boundary between the grip part 8 and the arm part 9 of the steering wheel 2 is pressurized by swing of the operation plate 3, so that there is no need for securing a space for fingers in advance.
