A method for determining the relative position of a moving unit by comparing scans of the environment and the moving unit is provided to secure high accuracy by using a computer program and a computer-readable data medium. According to a method for determining the relative position of a moving unit by comparing scans of the environment and the moving unit, the scans are continuously recorded by a distance sensor and stored in a memory. A processing unit compares a first scan(1) with a second scan(2). The relative position of the moving unit is determined at the time of the second scan related to the position correspondent to the first scan time. The processing unit repeatedly compares the first scan with following scans(3,4). Another relative position of the moving unit at the following scan times is determined with relation to the position correspondent to the first scan time. The final relative position of the moving unit is regarded as preliminary information.
