摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrooptical device such as a transverse electric field type liquid crystal display device whose manufacturing process is relatively simple and whose manufacturing cost is low. SOLUTION: The electrooptical device of the present invention is equipped with a nonlinear element (TFD element 43), a common electrode 42 (first electrode), and a pixel electrode 48 (second electrode) electrically connected to the nonlinear element on one of a pair of substrates, and an electrooptic substance layer is driven with an electric field produced between the first electrode and second electrode. Then the nonlinear element has a lower electrode 44, a top-surface insulating film 45 covering the top surface of the lower electrode 44, a flank insulating film 46 which covers one of two flanks on both sides in the extending direction of the lower electrode 44 and has a smaller film thickness than the top-surface insulating film 45, and an upper electrode 19 opposed to the lower electrode across at least the flank insulating film 46.
