PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical system of a substantially symmetrical type, capable of satisfactorily correcting various aberrations including a chromatic aberration. SOLUTION: In a Gauss-type optical system and a modified Gauss-type optical system, a refractive optical element comprising a solid material is provided. The solid material can satisfy any of the following conditions:θgF-(-1.665×10<SP>-7</SP>×νd<SP>3</SP>+5.213×10<SP>-5</SP>×νd<SP>2</SP>-5.656×10<SP>-3</SP>×νd+0.755)>0, andθgF-(-1.666×10<SP>-7</SP>×νd<SP>3</SP>+5.213×10<SP>-5</SP>×νd<SP>2</SP>-5.656×10<SP>-3</SP>×νd+1.011)<0, whereνd is an Abbe number of the solid material andθgF is a partial dispersion ratio of the solid material.
