PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for improving conversion of an alcohol to a carbonyl compound without remarkably increasing production cost and bringing about high carbonyl compound yield. SOLUTION: In the method for producing the carbonyl compound by dehydrogenating the alcohol in the presence of a zinc oxide-based catalyst, the zinc oxide-based catalyst contains≥90 wt.% catalyst particles having≥10.5 cm-1ratio of a geometrical surface area to a geometrical volume based on total catalyst particles.
