PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens system, having a high zoom ratio of 5 and high resolution, and a compact lens barrel for holding the zoom lens system of which total length in the collapsed state is small. SOLUTION: The invention is a zoom lens system which comprises a first lens group, having positive power, a second lens group including a reflective optical element having a reflecting surface for bending the light form an object, and having negative power, and succeeding lens groups, including at least one lens group having positive power, disposed in this order, starting from an object side to an image side, and satisfies the condition: -5.70<f<SB>1</SB>/f<SB>2</SB><-2.00 (where, Z=f<SB>T</SB>/f<SB>W</SB>>5.0, f<SB>1</SB>: combined focal length of the first lens group, f<SB>2</SB>: combined focal length of the second lens group, f<SB>W</SB>: focal length of all systems at the wide angle edge, f<SB>T</SB>: focal length of all systems at the telephoto edge, Z: zoom ratio), and a lens barrel for holding the zoom lens system.
