CARBON-CONTAINING REFRACTORY, METHOD FOR MANUFACTURE THEREOF, AND PITCH-CONTAINING REFRACTORY RAW MATERIAL

A pitch-containing refractory raw material (1) comprising pitch particles (2 ) having a softening point of 70 to 200~C and a particle size of 30 .mu.m or smaller carried on the surfaces of refractory raw material particles (3) having a particle size of 50 .mu.m or smaller. In the pitch-containing refractory raw material (1), the pitch particles are hardly aggregated to ge t hard even when the material (1) is stored for a prolonged period of time. Therefore, the material (1) can be used in the form of microparticles on eve ry occasions. When the material (1) is used as a part of the raw materials in t he manufacture of a carbon-containing refractory, the pitch can be dispersed uniformly in the form of microparticles during mixing or kneading. The finished carbon-containing refractory shows a significantly high corrosion resistance. The refractory can be also prevented from increasing in Young~s modulus while retaining a satisfactory strength level, and can show an extremely excellent thermal spolling resistance even when the carbon content is low.
