1,043,463. Apparatus for treating plantlet by cold shock. J. G. POTTIER. Jan. 7, 1964 [Jan. 19, 1963; Sept. 24, 1963] No. 782/64. Heading A1E. Plantlets are subjected to cold shock by inserting them at 1 between endless conveyer belts 2, 3 which pass through a refrigerating unit 4, 4 1 through which liquefied gas, e.g. liquid air, is circulated. The conveyers then pass through a reheating unit 10, 11 through which water circulates to bring the plantlets to ambient temperature. The plantlets are then conveyed to a receptacle 5 where they are removed from belt 3 by a stream of water flowing perpendicular to the belt 3 and which moves the plantlets to receiving screen 17. The belts 2, 3 comprise pinchbeck plates secured together and lined with strips of calico. In a modification the plantlets are held between pairs of plates of pinchbeck lined with calico, the plates of each pair being secured one to each conveyer. In a further modification a single conveyer belt is used the plantlets being contained in envelopes of pinchbeck detachably secured to the conveyer. The pinchbeck of the belts may be replaced by a polyester with a layer of aluminium or other material of high thermal conductivity. |
