A polyester resin comprising 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid (1,4- CHDA) as the main dicarboxylic acid unit which is produced with suppressed isomerization of trans-1,4-CHDA in esterification and polycondensation and which has a high melting point and is excellent in heat resistance; and a process for the production of the resin. A process for the production of polyester resin which comprises preparing an oligomer from a dicarboxylic acid component containing 1,4-CHDA as the main component and a diol component through esterification and subjecting the oligomer to polycondensation in the presence of a polycondensation catalyst, characterized in that the esterification is conducted by use of a basic compound, followed by the polycondensation with a polycondensation catalyst. The polyester resin obtained by the process satisfies the relationship: 0 < {(T0-Tp)/T0} x 100 < 12 (wherein T0 is mole percentage of trans 1,4-CHDA in the starting 1,4- CHDA and Tp is mole percentage of trans 1,4-CHDA units in the 1,4-CHDA units of the obtained polyester resin). ® KIPO & WIPO 2007
