Operation as in the parent Specification is effected, in an engine having an even number of fuel feed pipes, by causing cylinders I 1 , I 4 which are half a cycle out of phase to be fed via pipes T 1 , T 4 having chambers C 1 , C 4 separated by a movable or deformable partition M, so that the second feed of each cylinder is effected by direct pumping and the first feed by displacement of the partition due to the pressure of the second feed of the other cylinder. The diaphragm M shown may be replaced by a piston, which may have reduced ends acting as cushioning throttles, and the piston or diaphragm may have one or more small orifices to allow some interchange of fuel between the feed pipes, or a loose-fitting ball piston allowing flow around it may be used. In all cases there may be adjustable screw means delimiting the stroke of the partition. The invention is applicable to engines having (a) a single injection pump with a cylinder for each engine cylinder, (b) a pump for each engine cylinder or (c) a rotary pump or distributer having a single cylinder and the fuel distributed by pump piston rotation. |
