A method for decoding a compressed video stream is provided to improve the decoding performance of a binary arithmetic decoding process and enhance the performance of a decoding system by increasing the speed of the binary arithmetic decoding process. A probability distance with respect to an input stream and the size of a start point are compared to each other, and a binary value of the input stream is calculated according to the comparison result. An operation is executed on the probability distance and the start point to update the probability distance value and the start point value. When the updated probability distance is smaller than a predetermined bit value, a difference between the least significant bit position where 1 is placed in the predetermined bit value and the most significant bit position where 1 is located in the bit stream corresponding to the updated probability distance is calculated, and an input stream corresponding to the calculated difference is additionally read.
