PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound which improves the adsorptivity to the hair and skin that the conventional cationic polymer has, improves the weakness in the conditioning effect at the rinsing when formulated in hair treatment compositions, and gives, after the drying, a feeling of use with moistness without dryingness or with refreshing. SOLUTION: The cationically modified gellan gum is obtained by using a gellan gum as a water-soluble polymeric polysaccharide, introducing thereto a specific amount of a group containing a quaternary nitrogen, and adjusting the amount of the cation charge to a specific range.
