The invention relates to a method for operating a computer (14) connected to a dental treatment unit (12), said computer comprising at least one PC application saved thereon, by means of an operating element (16) pertaining to the dental treatment unit (12) and arranged in the treatment region. Interpretation software loaded on the computer (14) converts the operating commands inputted by means of the operating element (16) into functional commands on the PC application. All possible navigation and operating commands of the PC application are provided on an operating surface (17) and can be selected by means of the operating element. Said operating surface (17) displays functional commands which depend on the state of the dental treatment unit (12). The invention also relates to a dental treatment unit that is connected to a computer (14) comprising a software-based operating surface (17) by means of an interface (18), the operating surface (17) being operated by means of navigation and operating commands (A, B, C, D, E, F), using an operating element (16) arranged in the treatment region. Said operating element (16) is embodied in the form of a rotational element (22) with an axial key function.
