<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of increasing an image forming speed when the images of documents having a mixture of a monochrome document and a color document are formed continuously and simultaneously, accelerating the start of image formation. <P>SOLUTION: The image formation is started immediately when an image from a scanner 300 is read. The image formation is performed in a color mode, when an image to be printed is a color image. It is judged whether the image data of N sheets is stored or not, when the image to be printed is a monochrome image. Further, it is judged whether the monochrome images of a predetermined number of sheets continue or not, when the image data of the N sheets is stored. A first monochrome mode is executed when the monochrome images continue.
