PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a glass preform for an optical fiber by which the high quality glass preform for the optical fiber in high yield with the manufacturing cost suppressed to the utmost without carrying out a complicated correction process. SOLUTION: In the method of manufacturing the glass preform for the optical fiber, the glass preform for the optical fiber is manufactured by depositing glass fine particles formed by a burner 7 around a glass rod 11 having a pre-fixed clad part to become a core part and a part of a clad part and firing to clarify. The diameter ratio of the core part to the pre-fixed clad part to each other in the glass rod 11 is measured along the longitudinal direction and the bulk density of the glass fine particle deposited body 19 is set at a plurality of places of the glass rod 11 in the longitudinal direction based on the measured result so that the diameter ratio of the core part to the clad part in respective places after the clarifying is made uniform.
