<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide truncated and secretary hepatitis C E1 and E2 proteins and methods for isolating and recombinantly producing the same. <P>SOLUTION: Disclosed is Hepatitis C virus (HCV) E1 polypeptide, wherein the polypeptide lacks all or a portion of membrane spanning domains so that the polypeptide is capable of secretion into growth medium when expressed recombinantly in a host cell. In one embodiment, the polypeptide lacks at least a portion of its C-terminus beginning at or near about amino acid 370, which is numbered with reference to the HCV1 E1 amino acid sequence.
