PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve assemblability in a hydraulic shock absorber provided with a single damping force adjusting valve by changing the direction of supply and discharge of oil in a cylinder into another direction in a pushing-pulling process. SOLUTION: In this damping force adjustment type hydraulic shock absorber 10, a separator 65 for separating a first passage 31 from a second passage 32 is provided, a valve housing 70 is fitted into the outer peripheries of the cylinder 11 and the separator 65, and the damping force adjusting valve 50 is provided in the valve housing 70. Each of a first intermediate contact passage 31A for the first passage 31 and a second intermediate contact passage 32A for the second passage 32 which are provided in the separator 65 and each of a first intermediate contact port 31B for the first passage 31 and a second intermediate contact port 32B for the second passage 32 which are provided in the valve housing 70 make contact by each of first annular passages 31C, 31D and second annular passages 32C, 32D provided in recessed parts at at least the outer periphery of the separator 65 and the inner periphery of the valve housing 70.
