PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gene encoding a glycosylated protein called SLAM (signaling lyphocyte activation molecule) of 70kDa. SOLUTION: The invention relates to the a substantially pure or recombinant SLAM protein or peptide fragment thereof. And a protein or a peptide selected from a group comprising (a) a protein or peptide from a warm blooded animal selected from a group of birds and mammals, including a human or mouse, (b) a protein or peptide comprising at least one polypeptide segment of SEQ ID NO: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12, (c) a protein or peptide which exhibits a post-translational modification pattern distinct from natural SLAM, (d) a protein or peptide which is capable of co-stimulating a T cell with another signal.
