The proposed method for detecting substance by its effective atomic number consists in exposing the substance sample to X-radiation, recording the radiation that passed through the sample by scintillation detectors, providing the analog-to-digital conversion of the output signals of the detectors, and processing and displaying the data. The detectors are arranged in series so that the previous detector provides the filtration of the radiation at the input of the next detector. As the scintillation detectors, monocrystals are used that differ in their luminescence periods by no less than ten times. For the exposition, periodic sequences of X-radiation pulses are used that are modulated by the pulse length and power. The output signals of thescintillation detectors are isolated by band-pass filters with specified amplitude-frequency responses. The proposed method is distinctive by its increased resolution in detecting substances with close atomic numbers.
