PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition that exhibits higher elasticity while prevented from lowering of fracture resistance, and to provide a pneumatic tire exhibiting improved durability by employing the highly elastic rubber composition for a stiffener of a bead part. SOLUTION: The rubber composition comprises a rubber component comprising at least one of natural rubber and synthetic diene rubbers and, incorporated therewith, at least one modified novolak phenolic resin modified with a compound having an aliphatic double bond to bear the aliphatic double bond.
