PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focal position determining apparatus capable of positioning an imaging lens so as to focus on object's face, and to provide a method thereof. SOLUTION: An object is picked up while shifting the imaging lens by every prescribed distance in an optical axis direction, then, the entire focusing evaluation value graph G1 showing the focusing degree of the object image is obtained. Face detecting processing is performed in the positions Z1 to Z4 and Z5 to Z8 of the imaging lens where the entire focusing evaluation value becomes equal to or exceeding a prescribed threshold. When the face is detected out of the object image obtained in the positions Z1 to Z4 of the imaging lens, the area between the positions Z1 to Z4 is determined as a focusing range, and then, the object is picked up while shifting the imaging lens by every prescribed distance in the focusing range. In a face area focusing evaluation value graph G2 showing the focusing degree of the face detected out of the obtained object image, a position Zf where the maximum value is obtained is determined as the focal position of the imaging lens.
