An image forming apparatus is provided to sense a printing medium when a small quantity of printing medium is left in a paper-feeding cassette and inform a user that supply of printing medium is required through a display. An image forming apparatus includes a pick-up roller(21), a tray(30), a sensor(40), a display(14), and a controller(16). The pick-up roller picks up a printing medium(P). Printing media are stacked on the tray. The tray is pressed against the pick-up roller such that the printing media come into contact with the pick-up roller. The sensor senses the quantity of printing media left on the tray based on a variation in the position of the tray according to the quantity of printing media stacked on the tray and transmits a signal corresponding to the sensed quantity. The display displays a message that requests a user to supply printing media. The controller receives the signal from the sensor and transmits a control signal to the display to control the display to display the message when a small quantity of printing media is left.
