A machine and methods for automatically opening a closed passport (32), to a particular page for subsequent processing to be performed on the page. The passport is introduced into a machine (50) in a closed state, and then the machine opens the passport at a desired page. A pin (68) is inserted between two adjacent sheets of the passport to define a first portion (94a) and a second portion (94b). The pin is used to assist in moving the first portion sway from the second portion to exposed the desired page for subsequent processing.
