<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel cell system capable of accurately carrying out judgement of fuel gas leak at the time of system starting, and a detection method of gas leakage. <P>SOLUTION: The fuel cell system is capable of detecting leakage based on the pressure change in the fuel system piping 1 when a fuel gas is supplied to the fuel system piping 1 and the fuel piping 1 is enclosed. The fuel cell system has a control part 20 which judges existence of gas leak from one electrode to the other electrode of the fuel cell stack 10 at the time of system starting and controls supply time of the fuel gas to the fuel piping 1 at the time of detection of the leak based on the judgement result.
