A short message input processing method of a mobile communication terminal is provided to be capable of automatically converting into a short message input screen when a short message input button with envelope shape and an abbreviated number required for transmission are inputted so that originator telephone number information is displayed, thereby offering a more convenient user interface. A mobile communication terminal decides whether a short message input button(envelope shape) is inputted together with a random abbreviated number to the terminal(S200,S202). If so, the terminal converts the current mode into a character input menu screen while displaying originator telephone number information on a character input menu(S204,S206). The terminal decides whether a predetermined character inputting action is completed, and if so, the terminal transmits an inputted character(S208,S210).
