A collaborative transmission based adaptive multimedia streaming apparatus and a method thereof are provided to secure QoS(Quality of Service) even in a WAN(Wide Area Network) environment having a large traffic variation. A collaborative transmission based adaptive multimedia streaming apparatus includes a central server(100), a client(200), and a proxy server(300). The central server transmits video frame data with a constant bit rate. The client includes a central stream buffer(210) for storing the video frame data transmitted from the central server, a proxy stream server(220) for storing a proxy stream, a switching buffer(230) which is connected to the central stream buffer and the proxy stream buffer to switch transmission paths of the two buffers and switches the central stream buffer to the proxy stream buffer when an underflow is generated, and an LMS based transmission rate predictor(240) for estimating the transmission rate of the central server by using the transmission rate of a central stream, measured from the central stream buffer, and transmitting the estimation value. The proxy server calculates frame data for compensating for buffer underflow of the client based on the transmission rate estimation value transmitted from the LMS based transmission rate predictor in the case of server underflow of the client and additionally allocates an omitted part of the central stream to the proxy stream buffer.
