A portable authentication device (20) provides a positive or negative acknowledgment message (RM) to first vehicle lateral components e.g. an electronic steering lock (14), an engine control equipment (16), a transmission control equipment (18), in a driving authorization system (1). A second vehicle lateral component e.g. an electronic starter lock (12), receives acknowledgment message from the first vehicle lateral component, and codes and/or decodes the message using a common secret code (g1). An independent claim is also included for a driving authorization system.
