METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR THERMALLY COMPACTING EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE ARTICLES

An apparatus for thermally compacting boxes or other articles of expanded polystyrene, comprises a housing (10) having an entry opening (11) and first and second electrically- heated surfaces (14, 16) inclined downwardly towards each other and having a passage (15) at their lower ends. In use, boxes or other articles of expanded polystyrene are introduced into the housing (10) through the entry opening (11) to slide down the first electrically-heated surface (14) and into contact with the second surface (16) : the boxes or other articles melt and the melted polymer drains through the passage (15) and is collected by a receptacle (18), in which it solidifies.
