A transfer device for an optical pickup has a first meshing section for holding the optical pickup; a second meshing section meshing with the first meshing section; a transfer section for driving the second meshing section to transfer the first meshing section in the radial direction; a calculation section for calculating a backlash value, in the transfer direction of the first meshing section, between the first and second meshing sections; and a drive control section. The drive control section controls the drive section based on the calculated backlash value to transfer the optical pickup.
