PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a β-amyloid formation inhibitor containing a compound having a skeleton quite different from that of a compound previously reported to have β-amyloid formation inhibiting action as an active ingredient.

SOLUTION: This β-amyloid formation inhibitor contains the compound expressed by formula (I) (R is H, a 1-6C alkyl, an acyl or a saccharide residue; X is O or S; and Y is O or S) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
