PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ventilating method for ventilating the inside of a tunnel, and a ventilator for use in the ventilating method with a simple facility minimizing its occupied area in the cross section of the tunnel. SOLUTION: In this ventilating method, air is supplied to a working place A and exhausted from the working place A through the same air duct 2 utilizing a ventilator equipped with the air duct 2 piped to locate one end near the working place A and to locate the other end at a place separated by a predetermined distance onto the shaft S (portal) side from the working place A, a ventilating fan 4 taking in air Pa in the working place A through the air duct 2 when eliminating noxious substance, air supply fan 5 supplying outside air Fa to the working place A from the shaft S side through the air duct 2 at the normal time, and a switching damper 3 switching communication between the air duct 2 and ventilating fan 4 in eliminating noxious substance and communication between the air duct 2 and air supply fan 5 at the normal time.
