PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new bipyridine derivative useful as an intermediate in the fields of organic electroluminescent elements, medicines, agrochemicals, catalyst ligands, combinatorial chemistries, electrophotographic photoreceptors, dyes, etc. SOLUTION: The new bipyridine derivative is, e.g. a bipyridine derivative represented by general formula (1) or (2) (wherein, X is a heterocyclic residue containing≥2 hetero-atoms and having one or more sulfur atoms or oxygen atoms) or a salt thereof.
