This invention relates to the use of GIP (Gastric Inhibitory Polypeptide or Glucose Dependent lnsulinotropic Polypeptide) and/or of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol or 5,7-cholestadien-3-ß-ol) and analogues thereof, to initiate or promote the differentiation of stem or progenitor cells into insulin producing cells. Such cells are useful for the therapy of pancreatic autoimmune disorders, e.g. type I diabetes or LADA, or diabetes type II.
