An adsorbent for oral administration characterized by comprising a surface-modified spherical activated carbon which has an average particle diameter of 50 to 200 mum, specific surface area determined by the BET method of 700 m2/g or larger, bulk density less than 0.54 g/mL, total acid group content of 0.30 to 1.20 meq/g, and total basic group content of 0.20 to 0.9 meq/g. This adsorbent for oral administration has a high adsorbing ability and adsorbs a large amount of toxic substances when it is present in the intestinal canal. It is effective in significantly reducing the amount of proteins excreted in urine.
