PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element with which full color display of high resolution is attainable. SOLUTION: The display element has a light controlling layer provided with transferable fine particles 7 presenting coloring properties in a dispersion state and different particles 6 having a characteristic different from that of the transferable fine particles 7. The display method includes a black display step for flocculating the transferable fine particles presenting the coloring properties in the dispersion state to perform black display, a color display step for dispersing the transferable fine particles to perform color display and a white display step for performing white display by reflection of the different particles having the characteristic different from that of the transferable fine particles and is characterized in that at least any one of the steps is selected to perform display.
