A mail terminal senses insertion of a document into the terminal, scans the document in response to the sensed document insertion, and transmits the scanned document electronically over a telephone network. A host server receives the document over the telephone network, determines the name of the addressee from the received document, looks up document delivery instruction s stored in a memory in association with the name of the addressee, and delive rs the document to the addressee according to the delivery instructions.
