PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator without a machine room, capable of installation and a maintenance/inspection in a necessary minimum hoistway dimension to a size of a car, while securing an effective space more above and below the car. SOLUTION: This elevator without the machine room lifts and drives side part both sides of the car 102 by a rope 106 by a hoisting machine 111; and is constituted so that the rope 106 is arranged on the left and right, and these left-right ropes 106a and b are individually hooked on the hoisting machine 111 via pulleys 108a and b and deflection pulleys 110a and b, and the car 102 side is set to the roping ratio of 1 : 1, and next, the counterweight 103 side is set to the roping ratio of 2 : 1 with the left and right ropes 106a and b after being hooked on the hoisting machine 111 as one set; and is constituted so that an arranging position of the hoisting machine 111, the pulleys 108a and b and the deflection pulleys 110a and b becomes outside a vertical projection of the car 111.
