PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively suppress catalyst exhaust gas odor even at high altitude, about a controller for an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: An atmospheric pressure KPA is acquired based on output of an atmospheric pressure sensor (a step 100). Judging whether this atmospheric pressure KPA is smaller than a high altitude judgement value or not (a step 102), in the case that the atmospheric pressure KPA is smaller than the high altitude judgement value, the higher the altitude of a vehicle, the more correction is conducted to increase a target air flow rate at the time of odor suppressing control (steps 104, 106). A target throttle opening at the time of odor suppression is calculated from the corrected target air flow rate. In the odor suppression control, air is supplied to catalyst by opening the throttle during speed reduction fuel cut-off. Thus, the catalyst becomes an oxidation state and generation of hydrogen sulfide is prevented. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
