PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus and an imaging method by which AF focusing operation is widely performed without trouble from high luminance to low luminance when changing a driving method for a CCD in accordance with photographing environment. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus has: an imaging device 101 to receive a subject image by light from a subject passing through a focus lens 72a; a filter selection means 104 to select a filter which transmits the frequency component of the subject image through; an automatic focus detection means 104 to detect a focus from image data based on a signal from the imaging device 101 obtained by moving the focus lens 72a; and a pixel addition means 104 to perform driving for pixel addition of the imaging device 101, and uses the pixel addition means 104 in accordance with a photographing condition.
