<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus having a jam removal mechanism that eliminates the need for a user to draw out a sheet to remove a jam and that applies no load on the components of the image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: A rail 26 is attached to a fixing unit so as to allow a rail guide disposed in the image forming apparatus slide. Thus, the fixing unit can be drawn out of the image forming apparatus. When the fixing unit is drawn out of the image forming apparatus, a second rack 29 connected, via a pinion 30, to a first rack 28 attached to the rail 26 moves in a direction opposite to the drawn direction of the rail 26, thereby rotating a transfer gear 31 disposed on the rotary shaft of a transfer roller 17.
