A method and a device for software upgrade in a digital receiver are provided to inform a user of an expected time required for software upgrade for the user to determine a time point for carrying out the software upgrade. A method for software upgrade in a digital receiver includes the steps of sensing new software to upgrade among software transmitted via a certain channel(S10), and calculating an expected total upgrade time by measuring a time required for receiving a block of the software, wherein the calculated time is displayed on a screen(S20,S30). The upgrade is determined to be carried out or not according to the display(S40). A total remaining time is calculated and displayed on the screen when proceeding the upgrade according to the determination(S50-S70).
