A deactivation device (10) for use in an EAS system and comprising a detecti on transmit means (19, 22, 20b, 6) operable to transmit a detection field into a detection/deactivation area (26), a detecting means (5) operable to sense a signal from an EAS tag (9) responsive to the detection field, and a deactivating means (19, 21, 20c, 6) for transmitting a deactivating field into the detection/deactivation area (26) operable to deactivate said active EAS tag (9), and wherein said detection transmit means and said deactivating means use a common coil (6) to transmit the respective fields.
