The present invention can be used for testing materials of metallic structural units of buildings, bridges, and other objects. The proposed method for monitoring the plain-strain stress condition of material consists in using, for measuring stresses in the material, magnetoelastic transducers are used. Each transducer contains three identical U-shaped magnetic cores with excitation windings and measuring windings. The excitation windings of the transducer are connected so that the magnetic fluxes generated by the windings are arranged in different direction at the surface of the tested material. To determine the state of the material, an experimental diagram is used that characterizes the dependence of the maximal and the minimal stresses when the yield stress of the material is achieved. If the main stress vector is inside of the diagram outline, the material is in the state of elastic deformation. If the main stress vector is outside of the diagram outline, the material is in the state of plastic deformation. The proposed method provides a possibility to automate the monitoring process.
