PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing apparatus which can accept copying of a moving picture data during reproduction of the moving picture data, and can start copying the moving picture data from a part before the reproduction part without halting the reproduction temporarily. SOLUTION: The recoding and reproducing apparatus comprising: a hard disk drive 21, a signal processing part 30; a compression and expansion part 5 which reproduces the moving picture data recorded in a hard disk 24; and a DVD drive 22 for copying the moving picture data recorded in the hard disk 24 to a DVD 25, is provided with a DVD button which accepts the copying of the moving picture data during reproduction of the moving picture data, and a control part 1 which performs, when the DVD button is operated, processing of making the DVD 25 copy the moving picture data recorded in the hard disk 24 and continue the reproduction of the moving picture data by the hard disk drive 21 by controlling read-out and write-in of the hard disk drive 21 and the DVD drive 22, respectively.
