PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device employing a lateral electric field system and to provide a liquid crystal device and an electronic apparatus excellent in display characteristics with high contrast. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device 100 has a first substrate and a second substrate disposed opposing to each other holding a liquid crystal layer and has a first electrode 19 and a second electrode 9 on the liquid crystal layer side of the first substrate to drive the liquid crystal layer by an electric field E generated between the first electrode 19 and the second electrode 9. The liquid crystal layer contains a chiral agent which rotates liquid crystal molecules in an opposite direction to the rotating direction of the liquid crystal molecules when an electric field E is generated between the first electrode 19 and the second electrode 9.
