PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for profitably recovering 1,2-dichloroethane in high selectivity and in high conversion. SOLUTION: This method for producing the 1,2-dichloroethane, comprising reacting ethylene with chlorine in a condition that the ethylene is excessive, is characterized by separating the ethylene contained in an exhaust gas after the reaction, supplying the ethylene and chlorine to a passage formed from liquid 1,2-dichloroethane, disposing a static mixer in the passage on the downstream side of the supply position to dissolve the ethylene and the chlorine in the liquid 1,2-dichloroethane, and reacting the ethylene with the chlorine in the presence of a metal chloride catalyst.
