A battery powered surgical apparatus comprising: a housing; an endoscopic portion extending from the housing; a fastening assembly coupled to the endoscopic portion, the fastening assembly including a pair of jaws defining a stapling mechanism, at least one of the jaws being movable with respect to the other jaw; and a drive source disposed within the housing. The drive source includes a motor powered by an internal battery. The motor is adapted and configured for spinning a first gear. The first gear is in contact with a second gear such that rotation of the first gear rotates the second gear. The second gear is operatively connected to a drive member and a collar such that upon rotation of the second gear the collar cooperates and engages the drive member to move the drive member along a longitudinal axis.
