<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved string for a musical instrument which is anticorrosive, and easier to play faster and more comfortably than a conventional string. <P>SOLUTION: The string (18) includes a polymer cover (26) that protects a string (16), from contamination while maintaining the original "lively" sound of the musical string of a musical instrument. By supplying the cover (26) over a conventional string (16) and preferable over a conventional wound string, the string (16) is protected against contamination while also making the string easier to play. The preferred cover comprises at least one layer of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) that is most preferably sealed with a polymer coating. In a specially preferred embodiment, the cover is applied over a portion which has relatively reduced variable mass along the length of the string.
